On November 9, 1989, a spokesman fumbled a press conference, announced that East Germans could cross immediately, and by midnight crowds were standing on the wall at the Bornholmer Strasse checkpoint while border guards ran out of instructions. Within days Berliners with hammers and chisels, nicknamed wall woodpeckers, were doing the demolition themselves, one souvenir chunk at a time, live on television for a world that could not quite believe the footage.
