In Reykjavik, Iceland, Bobby Fischer faced Boris Spassky for the World Chess Championship, American against Soviet, in a match newspapers covered like a military campaign. Spassky's side had held the title for decades and treated chess as statecraft. Fischer arrived late, argued about cameras, forfeited a game, and then simply outplayed the whole Soviet chess machine, becoming champion and a Cold War folk hero in a cardigan.
