The coiled rattlesnake on this vintage styled shirt is not decoration. It is a warning with an American pedigree. In 1754 Benjamin Franklin published his famous snake cartoon, cut into segments, with the caption Join, or Die. Two decades later Christopher Gadsden turned the rattlesnake into a flag for the young navy and marines: coiled, rattling, and accompanied by four words of plain advice about where not to step. The design here pairs that emblem with New Hampshire's motto, Live Free or Die, which General John Stark, a hero of Bunker Hill and Bennington, sent as a famous toast in 1809, adding that death is not the worst of evils. He meant every syllable. Between the snake and the sentence, the shirt carries two and a half centuries of American refusal in one graphic.
