On July 2, 1863, Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a young rhetoric professor from Maine's Bowdoin College commanding the 20th Maine, held the far end of the Union line on Little Round Top at Gettysburg. His men had repelled attack after attack up the hill, their line bent back like a hinge, and now the cartridge boxes were nearly empty while another Confederate assault formed below. Chamberlain's answer was not retreat. It was the order this gritty battlefield poster carries: fix bayonets. The regiment swung downhill like a gate, bayonets levelled, and swept the slope in one charge that saved the flank and became the battle's most retold small moment.
