Around 1440, in Mainz, a goldsmith named Johannes Gutenberg put together movable metal type, oil based ink, and a converted wine press, and quietly broke the world's information monopoly. Before him, books were copied by hand, one at a time, and cost like jewellery. Within decades his workshop's methods had spread across Europe, presses were running in hundreds of towns, and more books existed than in all the previous centuries combined. His famous Bible came off the press in the 1450s, beautiful as any manuscript, except there were about one hundred and eighty of them, give or take a few. Cheap print carried the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, newspapers, and every argument since.
