Every July Fourth has two narrators. Americans hear fireworks, declarations, and a birthday. The British of 1776 heard something else entirely, and this shirt politely quotes them: Happy Treason Day, ungrateful colonials, since 1776, Union Jack included. From London's side of the Atlantic the whole affair was an illegal rebellion by subjects who owed the Crown taxes, loyalty, and considerably better manners. The colonists, having made their argument with muskets for eight years, got to write the history books and name the holiday. That is the joke and the history lesson in one design: treason is a word the losing side supplies. Wear it to the cookout, the fireworks, and anywhere a British friend, a loyalist reenactor, or a July Fourth purist can be trusted to take the teasing in the spirit of 1783.
