Crowned king in January, he marched north in September and destroyed a Viking invasion at Stamford Bridge, then turned around and marched the length of England back south because William of Normandy had landed behind him. On October 14, exhausted, outnumbered in cavalry and archers, his army held a shield wall on Senlac Hill near Hastings for an entire day before it broke. Tradition, embroidered into the Bayeux Tapestry, says an arrow found the king, though historians still argue over which stitched figure is really Harold and what the arrow proves. What nobody disputes is the result. The Norman Conquest rewired England's language, laws, castles, and aristocracy in a single generation. England has been arguing about that day ever since.
