Membership rules were simple aboard a hydrogen airship: no smoking, anywhere, ever, under any circumstances. The Hindenburg was the largest aircraft ever flown, a flying hotel longer than two football fields, filled with seven million cubic feet of the most flammable gas available because helium was scarce and embargoed. On May 6, 1937, arriving at Lakehurst, New Jersey after a routine Atlantic crossing, the great ship caught fire at the mooring mast and was gone in about half a minute, in front of newsreel cameras and a radio reporter whose horrified broadcast became part of the century's soundtrack. Thirty six people died, the passenger airship age ended that evening, and investigators still argue about the exact spark to this day.
