The Revolution took his crown, then his title, then, on January 21, 1793, his head, in front of a silent crowd in the Place de la Revolution. This regal portrait, worn with revolutionary irony, is for French Revolution enthusiasts who read the whole story and still argue about where it truly turned. He kept the crown for eighteen years.
