One broken slab of black stone did what centuries of guesswork could not. The Rosetta Stone carries the same royal decree, issued in 196 BC for Ptolemy the Fifth, carved in three scripts side by side: Egyptian hieroglyphs, everyday Demotic writing, and Ancient Greek, which scholars could still read. French soldiers rebuilding a fort near Rosetta in 1799 dug it out of a wall, and after years of rivalry and copying, Jean Francois Champollion announced in 1822 that the hieroglyphs finally made sense again. An entire civilisation got its voice back because one inscription had been thoughtfully published in translation. The Rosetta Stone Society is our club for language nerds, ancient history readers, translators, and anyone who has ever stared at a text knowing the meaning is in there somewhere.
